Vacation Delay In Child Abuse Investigation

Vacation Delay In Child Abuse Investigation

In Fort Worth, Texas a man in possession of over 40,000 child pornography images admitted to police that he had abused over 100 children. One of the most disturbing aspect is his co-defendant in this crime, a 17-year-old boy that was enrolled in a local school in an attempt to find more victims.  The investigation was delayed when a detective was on medical leave, thereby allowing the images to continue to be swapped on social media, as the newly enrolled “student” made new friends.  The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent information regarding this sexual abuse in June, however it was just recently that the investigation made progress as the detective returned from leave.  The issue?  It was only a single image case therefore it didn’t have a high-priority standing and was not assigned to another detective.  Not good enough.  Even one is a priority.

One child abused should have made it a priority that was immediately and thoroughly investigated.  Child pornographers operate in secret and as this shows, one tip can lead to thousands of sexually abused and exploited children who will need years of mental health and other support to recover from what they have experienced. One photo, one child, lead to many as is normally the case.  Children should not be traded like cards and all should be accountable.
